New Entry Procedures in Japan this November

The following is from The Boston Globe:

"Starting in November, Japan will introduce new entry procedures for visitors to the country as a security measure. All foreigners above the age of 16, who are not special status residents or are not traveling as a diplomat or on official government business, will be digitally photographed and have their fingerprints digitally scanned upon entry to Japan. Any visitor who refuses to submit to these procedures will be denied entry.

Japan intends to start educating airlines, travel agencies and the public about the new procedures during September.

Some confusion exists about how and when the procedures will be implemented. Some reports say they will start Nov. 1, while others say 'before Nov. 27.' Check with your airline or travel professional before your trip if you have concerns about the new procedures. Some initial delays may occur at airport immigration counters when the new process goes into effect."
